DBSA Dallas: A Legacy of Support and Strength
Founded in 1986 as an official chapter of the National Depression Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA), the Dallas Chapter has long been a pillar of support and education for individuals affected by mood disorders. Initially, we hosted two monthly meetings at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW). These included a peer support meeting and an educational session featuring professionals such as doctors and therapists dedicated to psychiatric care.
In 1988, we expanded our reach by establishing another peer support group in Duncanville, Texas. This growth continued, leading to the addition of a group at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Irving, Texas. Over the years, our chapter has adapted to the changing landscape of communication and support, embracing digital platforms to enhance accessibility. With the advent of social media and online tools, we transitioned to offering virtual support through Zoom, now hosting six diverse online meetings, from weekly to bi-weekly.
Our meetings are inclusive, welcoming individuals diagnosed with mood disorders and their friends and family members who support them. Beyond our meetings, we foster community and connection through biannual barbecue picnics at White Rock Lake each spring and fall, open to members, their families, and friends. These gatherings are a testament to our enduring commitment to providing a supportive community and sharing experiences in a welcoming environment.
As we continue to evolve, the Dallas Chapter remains dedicated to offering hope, support, and education to those navigating the challenges of depression and bipolar disorder.
